Once, he had read history for the sheer pleasure of it.

Even as a child, he had loved to hear the stories of what had happened long ago. Great battles, heroic quests, all the exciting adventures a boy could hope to hear.

As a young man he'd learned the value of knowledge, and the thrill of knowing something that nobody else did. And if people called him smug, he told himself, it was only jealousy.

But a Steward didn't have the luxury of simple enjoyment. Now, he studied history because the knowledge might make the difference between survival and annihilation.

Very much to teh point! I've always thought life was hard for and on him.

You paint a very realistic and sympathetic portrait of Denethor and his responsibilities as Steward of Gondor here. Nicely done.

Oh, definitely. I think his marriage to Finduilas was a brief bright spot in what was an otherwise grim life.

Thank you!

I think that it's kinda unfair that he's judged solely by his failures, instead of the whole lifetime he spent serving Gondor.
