Spoilers!
After a bit of walking, Ian figures out how to operate the Dalek. Which is a good thing, because they're challenged before they can even get to the lift. Susan fools her way through, but the Dalek finds out that they're not supposed to be there when it reports the prisoners are on the way up. Meanwhile, Ian is having trouble getting out of the tin can.
The Daleks try to stop them, and magnetize the floor, but don't shut down the lifts. Ian insists that the rest of the group go ahead, while he continues to try to escape. Cue drama and flailyness from Susan and protests from Barbara.
Anyway, up they go. In a lift that's almost as slow as the ones at every convention hotel I've ever ridden in. Meanwhile, Ian is trying to escape, and monologuing for the audience's benefit. (Because people were stupid back in the sixties, and couldn't figure out that pounding in the tin can meant that he was still trying to escape, I guess.) And the Daleks are trying to cut through the door.
When they finally get through, the Daleks shoot Ian's Dalek, but it's empty. (Surprise, surprise.) Now, they finally get the bright idea to bring the lifts back. Ian barely manages to rejoin the rest of the party before it goes back down. They're upstairs, with a view ofthe outside, and they see the Thalls walking into an ambush.
For their part, the Thalls are being cautious, despite the fact that their king-guy thinks it's unnecessary. And the Daleks have decided to EX-TER-MI-NATE the escaped prisoners, as well as setting up the ambush mentioned in the title.
Team TARDIS tries to bang on the window to warn the Thalls, but it's soundproof. They finally manage to get a door open to escape, and Ian, Barbara, and Susan drop a Conveniently Located (TM) piece of sculpture on top of the lift.
The Doctor is all for going back to the TARDIS and getting the hell off this crazy planet, but Susan reminds him that if it hadn't been for the Thalls giving them the medicine, they'd all be dead. So Ian goes to warn them. And then stands there while the king-guy speechifies to the Daleks. He only intervenes at the last moment, when it's too late; king-guy is shot in the back and the rest of the Thalls have to Run Away! Run Away!
Somehow, the Doctor and the women have already met up with the rest of the Thalls; they're all talking and having a nice time. The Doctor is trying to figure out where they are so that they can fix their position and figure out a way home. Meanwhile, Ian tries to convince the Thalls that they need to fight the Daleks, if they are going to survive. The Doctor finds out about the history of Skaro, but he doesn't want to stay to help the Thalls. The Daleks are too dangerous. He asks Ian for the fluid link, and gets an oh-crap look in return.
Turns out the Daleks confiscated the fluid link when they searched Ian a couple episodes ago. (And you didn't think to mention it, Ian? REALLY!?) It's still in the Dalek city.
So it's pretty obvious what next episode's "The Expedition" will be searching for.
