So I'm watching Good Eats and Alton says "but apples are from Kazakhstan" and I go hmmm ... A moment with Wikipedia confirms it: Kazakhstan is on the Caspian Sea.

Guess who's the Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea? If you said Hector Barbossa, you'd be exactly right.
