Having touched down someplace that's not Earth, Team TARDIS goes to clean up before adventuring again; as they do so, the radiation meter goes into the danger zone. (And it wasn't until about halfway through the episode that I realized how close they all came to getting fried themselves. If Ian hadn't had so much trouble figuring out the sonic shaver, they would have all been dead.) They step outside into a world that's creepily still; though there's a wind blowing, the trees aren't moving. When Ian touches one, he discovers that it's been burned to brittle stone.
During their explanations, they find that everything is dead; even a flower that has been petrified in place. There's also a strange, dead animal that the Doctor says was metal even before it died.
Barbara and Ian talk about how badly they want to go home, and Susan tries to explain that they need more information to feed to the computers. Personally, I think the reason is that the TARDIS has decided that she likes Barbara and Ian, and isn't going to let them go quite yet.
When the Doctor discovers a city, he wants to explore, but the rest of the group doesn't. It's getting dark, though, so they head back to the TARDIS. On the way, something brushes Susan on her shoulder, though the menfolk think that she's being afraid of nothing. (Though given the way both she and Barbara have been portrayed so far, I can't blame them too much.)
Back at the TARDIS, they talk, eat bacon-and-egg bars, and try to decide what to do next. The Doctor still wants to explore the mysterious city, but when Susan begs him, he starts up the TARDIS -- or tries to, because something goes wrong. A part has leaked mercury, there's none on the ship, so they'll have to go to the mysterious city to find some. I SAW WHAT YOU DID THERE, DOCTOR!
Since it's inexplicably morning, despite all the previous business seeming to have taken about ten minutes, they take off to the city. There, they forget the first rule of adventuring: Never Split the Party.
The Doctor, Susan, and Ian all meet back at the appointed time, but Barbara is missing. She's been going down strangely tilted corridors, and had doors close behind her. The rest of the party goes looking for her, but she's been found already, by something terrifying enough that she starts screaming, but then, so was a dead pig head in the last serial, so that's not saying much.
All we see is what looks like the top of a toilet plunger ...
