Blogger Who: The Expedition

Spoilers!
This episode was marked more by what didn't happen, than by what did. Though it's not the middle episode of the serial, it feels like the dreaded middle book of a trilogy. It was primarily concerned with getting things set up for the Exciting Bits (TM) to come later.
The primary conflict was between Ian and the Doctor. The Doctor here has no compunctions whatsoever about using the Thalls as his own personal army so that he can get back the fluid link and get the TARDIS moving again. Ian doesn't like the idea AT ALL, and I'm not quite convinced with how the Doctor convinced him, but he does. Then Ian provoked a fight with Alydon, the leader of the Thalls (though how we're supposed to tell them apart, I don't know.)
Meanwhile, the Daleks realize that they've become dependent on the radiation for their survival. They decide to set off another neutron bomb. (Dun-dun-dun!)
Of course, the Thalls agree to fight, and Our Heroes come up with a plan. They divide their forces to flank the Daleks. The last part of the episode follows the group that Barbara and Ian are with, and it ends with Generic Thall #4 (we're supposed to care about this dude WHY?) next to a ginormous whirlpool, and the rest of the group hearing his screams.
Here's hoping that with all the tedious set-up concentrated in this episode, "The Ordeal" will get things moving again.
