By the time he covered the palantir and climbed down from the Tower of Ecthelion, Denethor was exhausted. Tension knotted in his neck until his head throbbed, and after clenching his teeth for long hours, it felt like a heated poker stabbing into the hinge of his jaw.

Before he went to his lonely bedchamber, he stopped by the nursery to check on his sons. He found them both in Boromir's room, curled up together. Gently, he untangled Faramir from his brother to carry him to his own bed.

Faramir wrapped his arms around Denethor's neck. "I love you, Mamma."

Wow, you managed to address so many topics in one hundred words! The strain of the Seeing Stone; the loneliness; the love for his sons; the loss of the boys' mother.

Redign something like this makes me wonder what makes people hate that guy whose life has certainly never been a pleasure cruise, difficult personality or not...

I don't understand it either. Certainly he's not a fluffbunny (you wouldn't dare go up and give him a big hug, no matter how much you suspect he might need one) but he's a man who's willing to sacrifice everything to protect his people. Ultimately he's a tragic hero; he fell, yes, but only after fighting every step of the way.
