I was reading GAFF and someone mentioned that Padme actually "had something like a reason to give up hope" and given my current obsession with Denethor and my dislike of the whole "lost the will to live" I suppose the crossover was inevitable.

Denethor: Two living children and she just gives up?

Padme: Well, my husband had just fallen to the Dark Side.

Denethor: Doesn't take much, does it?

Padme: Excuse me, Mr. Flaming Plunge of Death ...

Denethor: I take it you gave up on reading the book, too?

Stupid Geoge Lucas. It would have been much better if Anakin had crushed her throat and they'd barely been able to get Luke and Leia out before she died from the injury or something like that. Lost the will to live my ass.

Yeah--that and/or poor motivationand equally poor characterization. Not that it came as a surprise. I had already been disappointed at how things went in Ep2. At that time, I had seenm some fanfic that would have made an incomparably better script. Oh well.

I used to literally cover my ears, close my eyes and hum in the threatre during the Denethor scenes. Not that I didn't see RotK four times on the big screen, mind.

I've actually got a better use for the Denethor scenes in RotK; I feel compelled to make things up to him by writing fics where he's actually properly characterized. (Well, I hope he is, anyway.)
