It was only a week after the messenger came bearing news of Faramir and Eowyn's son, when Boromir's wife went into labor. By noon the next day, word came to Denethor's ears that she had given birth to a daughter.
It was nearly evening when Boromir himself arrived in Denethor's office, bearing a small, swaddled bundle. Denethor set down his quill. "I assume she is in possession of all her fingers and toes?"
"Of course."
He rose from the desk. "By the way you are strutting around, one would think you were the one who gave birth to her."
"I would like to think I had some small part in the task."
Denethor raised an eyebrow, and held out his arms. Boromir handed her over with exaggerated care. Taking the girl into his arms, Denethor was surprised to realize that he remembered how to hold a child, gently, so that he wouldn't wake her. Her face was red, and her scalp was covered with downy black hair.
Denethor tried to find something to say around the unexpected lump in his throat, but Boromir spoke first. "We were thinking of calling her Finduilas."

Nice thinking on the part of Mr. and Mrs. Boromir! (I suspect the announcement will even enlarge that lump in Denethor's throat! *g*)

Date: 2008-06-28 02:17 pm (UTC)So sweet! I love Denethor's gruffness melting away as soon as he holds his granddaughter. And then, of course, Boromir's idea of what to call his new daughter. Awwww.
Nicely done!
